2012 Florida Legislative Session Update: Lots of Capitol Activity -- But Not on PIP
by Jack Hebert, FCA Government Relations Director and Paul Lambert, FCA General Counsel
(Thursday, February 16, 2012, Tallahassee) – The sixth week of the Legislature’s annual nine-week session was a busy one for a wide variety of controversial issues – from budget-cutting concerns to prison privatization – but little happened in the area of no-fault/PIP auto insurance reform. Though sources in the House suggested early in the week that the bad House bill, CS/HB119 by Rep. Jim Boyd (R-Bradenton), might make its final committee appearance late this week, that never materialized. Meanwhile, the Senate likewise chose to remain quiet on the issue this week.
However, we still believe there will be attempts to move the issue to the forefront soon. PIP reform appears to remain a top priority for Gov. Scott and CFO Jeff Atwater who did make time this week to stage yet another press conference in coordination with the insurance industry on the subject. (See separate story below.)
Thanks to those FCA members who have reached out to their Representatives and Senators – and continue to do so - expressing their concerns about the very bad public policy presented in the House bill. Your efforts are certainly causing many to stop and take a closer look at this significantly flawed proposal. Don’t stop now! Please continue to have your patients reach out to express their displeasure to their legislators as suggested in the recent FCA poster.
