Will a Florida Supreme Courtís Ruling End Lawyer Referral Services?
Wednesday, 30 September 2015

In a September 24 ruling, the Florida Supreme Court unanimously concludes that the public is at significant risk from for-profit lawyer referral services that also refer clients to other businesses and instructs the Florida Bar to adopt strong rules precluding lawyers from accepting referrals from non-lawyer owned referral services. The Florida Bar Board of Governors ignored the Special Committee on Lawyer Referral Services’ recommendation that lawyers be prohibited from accepting referrals from non-layer owned referral services. Instead, the Board of Governors amended a current referral service rule to allow the status quo of allowing for-profit referral services owned by non-lawyers to operate. It is that amendment the Florida Supreme Court rejected, and instructed The Florida Bar to propose amendments that preclude Florida lawyers from accepting referrals from any lawyer referral service that is not owned or operated by a member of the Florida Bar.

Tuesday, 08 April 2014

(From ACA "Week in Review" of 04/03/2014)  On April 1, President Obama signed into law H.R. 4302, the "Protecting Access to Medicare Act of 2014," which averted a 24 percent reduction in Medicare physician payments. The temporary "doc fix" to the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) allows for continuation of the 0.5 percent update, previously implemented on Jan. 1, 2014, through Dec. 31, 2014, and a zero percent update from Jan. 1, 2015 through March 31, 2015. Also included in the law is a provision that delays conversion from ICD-9 to ICD-10 diagnostic and procedure coding until at least Oct. 1, 2015. ACA is awaiting further clarification on how this delay will affect providers and insurance companies going forward.
